In the late 1920's, I developed a very annoying cough and had a definite feeling of illness. I went to see a lung specialist, and while he did not pronounce it tuberculosis, he suggested I go home and remain in bed, taking complete rest for some time.

As I was then single and living with an elderly couple, I was not sure this could be accomplished. However, the dear lady of the house willingly agreed to prepare my meals and take care of any other of my needs.

At the end of two months there seemed to be no improvement. Then one evening the gentleman of the house came into my room and asked me if I had ever heard of Christian Science. I told him I had heard of it but thought it was a system of saying, "I am well, I am well," over and over again. He told me his mother who had lived in Boston had investigated it and had become a staunch Christian Scientist, that she had sent him a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and that it was in the bookcase in the den, if I would like to read it. During the time I spent in bed I had read many of his fine books, so I willingly agreed to read it.
