With humility I wish to express gratitude for Christian Science...

With humility I wish to express gratitude for Christian Science and all it is doing for mankind, for my loved ones, and for myself. As a child I was enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School, where the truth of God and man was taught me by loving Sunday School teachers. When I was sixteen, the attractions of a materialistic way of life were more appealing than a life governed by God. I stopped attending Sunday School and joined the United States Navy.

For the next fifteen years I never attended church, and did not follow a Christian way of life. I could not figure out why I was so unhappy.

I was on a Navy destroyer in the South China Sea, when a fungus infection appeared on my feet. The ship's doctor treated the disease with every type of medication available, and yet the infection grew worse. Two dermatologists treated me when the ship entered port. This treatment did not help my feet. Back at sea, I had to start wearing sandals. Two weeks later I could not stand on my feet for more than a few minutes at a time. At this point I realized that I would have to turn to God for help if I wanted to get well. I began to remember the truth I had learned in Sunday School. I wrote home for a Bible and a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. In the letter I asked to have a Christian Science practitioner help me through prayerful treatment. While I waited for an answer, my feet grew worse.
