Trespasses ... sins (Eph. 2:1)

The Greek word translated "trespasses" means literally "lapses," or deviations from truth and uprightness; while the word rendered "sins" derives from a Greek root meaning orginally "to miss the mark." Sins in this sense are thus viewed as the results of failure to aim correctly.
