As a young married woman, I was greatly impressed with the beautiful thoughts my mother gave out due to her acceptance of Christian Science, and this inspired me to take up the study of Science.

We have had many proofs of God's healing and protecting power in our family, some of which were instantaneous. A few of these healings were those of colds, burns, bursitis, sprained ankle, appendicitis, and scarlet fever. We have felt God's protection while driving the car, and our home was saved when there was a destructive fire next door. A growth behind one of my eyes was healed with the help of treatment in Christian Science by a practitioner. An optometrist who examined my eyes said a change of glasses would not help, as there was a growth behind the eye. I said nothing but called for the help of a practitioner when I got home. The healing was gradual, taking about a year.

One of the most outstanding demonstrations of God's availability in time of need was shown when our son was saved from drowning. He was out with a friend in a light canoe in a large ocean harbor in early spring. A huge wave capsized the canoe, throwing both boys into the water. The friend was rendered unconscious from the cold water. My son, who was fourteen at the time, held the other boy up and swam about three hundred yards to the shore, despite the fact that both boys had on heavy winter clothing and storm boots. Although I could not see the boys when I went to look for them from my position on the shore, I could see the capsized canoe bobbing about and realized something was wrong. I turned to God with my whole heart. Many angel thoughts came to me, freeing me from fear. The outstanding one I repeated over and over was, "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee" (Isa. 43:2). I felt sure of God's presence and power and knew that God could take care of these boys whether they were on land or sea.
