Our "listening ear"

[For children]

Tap-tap . . . jingle . . . sizzle . . . swish . . . woof!

Sounds are all around us. Some are loud; some are faint. Some are beautiful like our favorite songs. Then there are clangs, bangs, and squeals. In the dark we can make out rain on the roof or a jet whizzing overhead.

Without looking, we can identify the postman's whistle, his footsteps on the walk, the soft thud when the letters drop into the mailbox. We know who it is and what he is doing.
