In 1956, my husband and I were on vacation in Rome, Italy

In 1956, my husband and I were on vacation in Rome, Italy. Because the weather was very hot, my husband could not wear his coat. He put all our money, over a thousand dollars in currency and another thousand in a bank draft, and our credentials into my handbag, saying, "Don't let your handbag out of your sight for a moment!" On the third day of our stay we were going through an art gallery, when suddenly I realized I did not have my handbag. I had no recollection where I saw it last.

I was still a very new student in Christian Science, but I knew enough to realize I must rid my thought of fear and inharmony. My husband was not interested in Science. I left the gallery, praying as I went, and all I seemed to know or think was that God's man expresses integrity. I was not concerned with loss; it did not enter my mind. I was concerned with man's truthfulness. I knew that God is Truth and that His child is Godlike, hence that all men are, in reality, truthful. I held to this and nothing else.

I did not know where to go or what to do, as we had left our hotel early in the morning and had been sight-seeing all day. We had traveled on three different buses and stopped at a small restaurant for lunch. My husband had the bus fare and lunch money, so we had no need of my bag. Finally I came to a street where in the distance were some buses, and close by were some bus drivers. They stood in a ring as if playing cards. All of them had their backs to me, and to my knowledge none ever looked at me or turned around.
