Don't Be Fooled by a Mask

One morning as I walked into a parking lot, a fast-moving car crossed the sidewalk entrance and stopped abruptly a few inches from my coat. As I turned toward the car, the driver, a young man in his teens, alighted and came toward me in a threatening manner, using violent language.

I noticed his disheveled, unshaven appearance, but the thought that came to me was, "God's perfect child." Through the teachings of Christian Science I knew that man's true identity is not material but spiritual, for man is created in the likeness of God, divine Spirit. I realized that as man is a perfect expression of God, Love, the young man could not, and certainly would not wish to, inflict harm.

With this angel message came also the conviction that the enraged countenance before me was but a mask, completely false and unreal. Realizing that there was no point in speaking to a mask, I turned away, walked over to my car, and sat quietly, endeavoring to gain a clearer perception of the truth. After a few moments I heard a voice at the window. It was the young man. His manner was calm and affable. He said, "I'm sorry. I should not have spoken to you like that."
