RADIO PROGRAM NO. 382 - Facing Up to Fear of Flying

[The speaker is Florence Ludgate. The questioner is David McAlary.]

Questioner: If you were to give two different people a ticket for a trip by train or bus or plane, one might be delighted, while the other might actually be afraid. Many people feel safer at home that when they're away. Some are especially afraid of flying. They simply feel that the sky is no place for people.

Speaker: I know that fear of flying exists. Of course, we have the comfort of travel statistics, which show that flying is as safe as any kind of travel—that the norm is safety. People fly millions of miles with complete safety and assurance. But we have to find a sense of assurance deeper than statistics. We can begin to face these fears and overcome them as we grasp man's actual God-sustained safety wherever he is. There is a religious dimension to overcoming fear of flying.
