Diamonds in the Wilderness

[For young teens]

"Wilderness trips are great," thought Karen wearily, "but they can sure be rugged too!" She and her friend Jan shouldered the heavy canoe for another portage, the third one that day.

"More than a mile this time," grumbled Jan, "and then all the way back again to get supplies."

The trip had not been well planned, it seemed. Packs and supplies were poorly organized with heavy canned goods, which were bulky and hard to carry. The route, with its backbreaking portages along uneven trails, was difficult and exhausting. Here they were, three days into the Canadian wilderness, a tired, discouraged group. And Karen had a dull ache in her stomach that wouldn't go away.
