RADIO PROGRAM NO. 276 - Restoring a Marriage to Soundness

Questioner: Every couple wants a happy marriage. But with the ever-increasing divorce rate it's obvious that many people find it difficult to build a sound, happy marriage. Things are said and done—or not done—and soon another marriage is on its way to being broken. As somebody said, It's like walking through a pane of glass. There's a crash, and you know it's broken; but then you can't do anything about it. Do you agree with that?

Speaker: Well, that seems to be the picture in many instances, but the big difference, of course, is that fortunately marriage is not like a pane of glass. There is a resiliency in human relationships that makes it possible to restore or rebuild a marriage.

This is a tremendously broad subject, and I certainly don't want to oversimplify it. Marriage is a very personal thing, but perhaps a common denominator of a great many marriage problems is the aspect of motives. We need to ask ourselves: "What are our motives in wanting to save or maintain a marriage?
