"The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light"...

"The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light" (Isa. 9:2). What a joyous privilege to be able to testify to the redeeming power of divine Love!

Several years ago I found myself on the brink of darkness with an uncontrollable craving for alcoholic drink. I had been reared in an orthodox religion and had always just naturally turned to God for help when a problem arose. So when I went to bed at night, if I was sober enough to remember there is a God who helps us, I Prayed to be shown how to become free, how to be a better Christian, and how to help others.

Then one day I was offered a job that I felt was beneath me. I tried very hard to turn it down, but the employer finally persuaded me to try it. It was on this job that I met someone who expressed more love and compassion than I had ever known before. I soon found out she was a Christian Scientist. After we had talked a bit about Science, I asked if I could attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting with her. I couldn't understand much of what was said that first night, but I knew from the look on the people's faces that these Christian Scientists had something I had to know more about. So, although I was still drinking, I started attending services.
