"God is not mocked"

When we think of God as the Supreme Being, we find ourselves having to reach for the true meaning of the word "supreme." Applied exclusively to God, the term "supreme" indicates the unchallenged nature of His being: unchallenged Life is eternal Life; unchallenged substance is undeteriorating substance. Mrs. Eddy realized the unchanging dominion and substance of the supreme Life and revealed it to the world in Christian Science. In Science and Health she writes: "Spirit, God, is infinite, all. Spirit can have no opposite." Science and Health, p. 278;

This unopposed supremacy of God, good, is made manifest in man, who, as the Scripture attests, is made in His image and likeness. According to Science, God's likeness is the individual expression of the whole. Every quality and element of the self-existent All finds continuous and unlimited expression in man.

But what about the mortal testimony of physical life? If the matter, sickness, poverty, and discord which the human eye beholds are real, God would certainly be mocked by a creation out of harmony with its creator and uncontrolled by His love and wisdom. But the Apostle Paul declared, "Be not deceived; God is not mocked." Gal. 6:7; Christian Science explains this statement by showing that the mortal testimony is simply the objectification of the mortal, or carnal, mind. Mortal mind is the scientific name Mrs. Eddy gives evil to indicate its unreality, for whatever its appearance may be, evil can never be more than a baseless assumption that infinity can have an opposite. Never is it more than a presumptuous denial of God's presence, even though that denial may hide itself in all sorts of deceptions, often as discordant sensation or circumstance.
