Commitment to Good

The age of twelve is a wonderful time! A twelve-year-old does a great deal of serious thinking about his place in life.

At this age Jesus was asking searching questions at the temple (see Luke 2:46), and Mrs. Eddy was keenly alert to spiritual issues. Many others remember this as a time in their own lives of finding direction and of commitment to lifetime goals. Why, then, should any Sunday School teachers feel they cannot encourage pupils to join The Mother Church at an early age? If pupils are using the truths learned in Sunday School, they naturally learn to love the Church which perpetuates these truths. There is no question for them of the practicality of Christian Science. It is of inestimable value in schoolwork, first jobs, and in choosing careers. Identification with the Church that teaches this Science is a foundation and protection.

Teachers may want to point out to pupils that membership is a progressive step taken as a result of earnest prayer and spiritual growth, not simply as the result of a human decision or because others are taking it.
