Recognizing Angel Visitants

To many Bible readers, angels are supernatural apparitions, which, in the likeness of men and women, appeared to patriarchs and apostles to bless their experiences. But how one can practically apply Scriptural verses describing angelic visits in working out today's problems is a question.

To the Christian Scientist, these specific Bible passages afford a particularly practical explanation of his communication with Deity. In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 298), "Angels are not etherealized human beings, evolving animal qualities in their wings; but they are celestial visitants, flying on spiritual, not material, pinions." And on the next page she adds: "With white fingers they point upward to a new and glorified trust, to higher ideals of life and its joys. Angels are God's representatives."

Divine aid should be considered ever available to all mankind. Angels constitute the means by which individuals conceive immortal goodness and its application to human welfare. We recall, for instance, that through Jacob's wrestling with his own human weaknesses, he was aroused to receive the angel of Truth and Love. Jacob yielded to divine influence, and the angelic messenger from God blessed him and renamed him Israel, saving (Gen. 32:28), "For as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed."
