I am joyously grateful for Christian Science...

I am joyously grateful for Christian Science, which has been a great influence for good during most of my life. When I was twelve years old, my father was afflicted with an ulcerated tooth. The resulting swelling in his throat, which the doctor could not relieve, was so severe that his life was despaired of. In fact, the doctor predicted he could live not over twenty-four hours.

Previous to this time my parents had become acquainted with a Christian Science couple, both of whom were practitioners. As my father lay in the hospital he wrote on a pad of paper (he could no longer speak), "I will try Christian Science." Immediately my mother telephoned one of the practitioners and requested help. No medication was given after Christian Science treatment was begun. The swelling was relieved almost immediately, and my father was released from the hospital in a few days; and in two weeks he was back at the office and lived for many years afterward.

All our family immediately began the serious study of the Bible and of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and all have had many benefits from this study. Through my school years I continued the study, although during my college years my roommate referred to my study as "believing in Santa Claus." As I look back I see how Christian Science helped me greatly during those years; but gradually I began to follow the crowd in smoking and drinking.
