Our times lend themselves with peculiar urgency to sober and chastening reflection. They pose the insistent and bitter question of how the world came to the present tragic pass. I venture to suggest that one answer may be found in the great Sermon on the Mount wherein Jesus laid down the guiding principles of the good and abundant life.

"No man," he announced, "can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other," adding by way of applying the law, "Ye cannot serve God and mammon." ...
