RADIO PROGRAM No. 85 - The Spiritual Basis of Mental Health

INTERVIEWER: Many are searching for mental health, for inner peace, order, stability. And there's a growing recognition of the importance of mental elements in one's entire well-being. For example, in the book "Discovering Ourselves," Edward A. Strecker and Kenneth E. Appel said: "It is often futile merely to give drugs—this medicine for the headache; something else for restlessness; still something else for this or that odd sensation. ... The correct answer will frequently lead into the realm of conflicts, ... emotional upheavals, maladjustments." [The Macmillan Company, New York. Copyright, 1958.] But it's not enough just to spotlight inner conflicts and maladjustments. The need is to cure them. How can we do this? What is the answer to mental turmoil or disorder?

SPEAKER: I'd say it goes deeper than either physical remedies or professional techniques. The answer to mental health problems is spiritual. It is based on an understanding of the divine Mind, or Spirit, which is God. It is not to be found just by a probing into the weaknesses of the human mind, but by the exploring of man's unbroken relationship to the divine Mind.
