RADIO PROGRAM No. 79 - Finding Freedom from Alcoholism

INTERVIEWER: A tremendous search is going on to overcome the problem of alcoholism. Families, friends, and organizations are looking for ways to help the problem drinker. But there's a widely recognized need to go deeper than the drinking itself and deal with underlying causes.

This is reflected in a comment from Dr. William G. Hollister of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers: "Strange though it may seem, we must recognize that a gnawing, unsatisfied hunger for love, security, significance, or a sense of belonging can become transformed into a thirst that results in compulsive, uncontrolled drinking. ... As the inner hurts accumulate, the need to relieve rising tension grows more insistent. ... What was once a beverage casually taken becomes an anesthetic compulsively absorbed to dull the hurt of living." (Thinking Straight About Drinking, reprinted from the PTA Magazine, National Parent-Teacher.)
