"They shall speak with new tongues"

After directing his disciples (Mark 16:15), "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" (mankind in general), Christ Jesus indicated the nature of their ministry. He added, "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."

Explaining what is meant by the new tongue in the light that Christian Science throws upon the teachings of the Master, Mrs. Eddy writes in her book "Christian Healing" (p. 7): "'The new tongue' is the spiritual meaning as opposed to the material. It is the language of Soul instead of the senses; it translates matter into its original language, which is Mind, and gives the spiritual instead of the material signification."

"The language of Soul," which may seem strange to those who are unfamiliar with it, presents spiritual truths in terms that can be comprehended and demonstrated by those who are willing to exchange material-mindedness for spiritual-mindedness. One of the reasons why this language may seem strange to some is that they are already familiar with that which attempts to explain man and the universe in terms of an amalgamation of contrary qualities—a house divided against itself which cannot stand, as the Master used this description in refuting a misconception of his works (see Matt. 12:25).
