Early in life I attended an orthodox...

Early in life I attended an orthodox church, but I was not a church-going person. One day in 1940, out of a clear sky, I recommended to a dear one who was acquainted with Christian Science that we go to a Church of Christ, Scientist, on the following Sunday. I had just recovered from a serious illness and had lost considerable weight. In fact, a physician told me that my lack of weight was not a healthy condition, and as a result I had to pay an extra premium on my life insurance.

That was my first Christian Science church service, and I continued to attend. Soon I started reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, began the daily study of the Bible Lessons, given in the Christian Science Quarterly, and visited a Reading Room, where I learned of the Christian Science periodicals and the other writings by our Leader.

In a few months I noticed I was outgrowing my clothes, and I soon realized I had gained weight beyond all expectations. In less than a year many habits not in harmony with Christian Science, such as smoking, drinking, gambling, and the use of coffee, fell by the wayside. I had previously made human efforts to overcome these but without success; so I realized I had been healed through the study of Christian Science, for which I am eternally grateful.
