Activities for the Armed Services

"I feel that I am growing spiritually." These words were written to a Christian Science Minister by a grateful serviceman who thought that his interest in Christian Science had waned and that he did not agree with several of its teachings. They show how the serviceman's outlook was changed through contact with the Minister. This fact is also apparent from the following sentence in the same letter: "My contact with you has shown me very clearly that an understanding and appreciation of divine Love and of its infinite possibilities can lead to a fuller and more satisfying life."

The Minister to whom this letter was written is in the British branch of Christian Science Activities for the Armed Services. This branch has one Minister in Germany, one in Hong Kong, and nine Ministers and two Christian Science Representatives in the United Kingdom. One of the Ministers in England serves as Manager of the British branch. The Ministers and Representatives visit Armed Forces installations, distribute literature, and assist Christian Scientists in their respective areas. They also assist Christian Science service personnel in the United States Armed Forces who are stationed in England and Scotland.

Ministers correspond with service personnel who are at a distance from them. The Manager of the British branch writes to Christian Scientists who are stationed in overseas areas where there are no Christian Science Ministers or Representatives and arranges for literature to be sent to those who request it. Through these procedures and through loving and wise guidance and metaphysical support, many individuals have been helped to overcome wrong attitudes toward service in the forces and have been assisted to surmount numerous problems.
