As a boy I decided I wanted a career in the musical world; so I studied and practiced the piano and organ for years. At one time I was engaged as organist in a Church of Christ, Scientist. I knew nothing of Christian Science and looked upon it as just another religion, for I had been organist in churches of several other denominations and paid little attention to their theologies.

From the Christian Science services, however, I picked up some thoughts which made sense to me and which I adopted. I began to read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and was much impressed with the chapter on Prayer and with the explanation of God, especially the answer to the question, "What is God?" found on page 465: "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." These synonyms became realities to me, and for the first time I began to get glimpses of true substance.

A short time after my introduction to this Science I had to meet a great challenge, a challenge that changed the course of my life. After I had returned home from playing at a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, a flash fire occurred in our home, and my mother's clothing caught fire. I sped to help her, and as there was nothing nearby I could use, I extinquished the flames with my bare hands. With the assistance of a passing motorist, I rushed her to the nearest hospital.
