Teaching Little Children Is a Rewarding Activity

When an inexperienced teacher was asked to teach a class of small children in the Christian Science Sunday School, the question, "How shall I begin?" came repeatedly to her thought.

The Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy (Art. XX, Sect. 3) makes clear that the first lessons are the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, and the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation given on pages 16 and 17 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. But how was one to present these lessons in a way that the pupils could understand and learn to use them?

Much prayerful thought was given to adequate preparation. The teacher studied the definition of children in the Glossary of Science and Health (pp. 582, 583), also other references. The one she found particularly helpful was this: "The vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love" (ibid., p. 113). It then came to the teacher clearly that this was the standpoint from which she needed to advance. She saw that she could begin at once by loving—loving God, loving His word, and loving His children. This unfoldment brought many ideas as to how the Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, and the Beatitudes, together with interesting Bible stories illustrating them, could be presented.
