THE IMPORTANCE OF SPIRITUAL SENSE

Only through spiritual sense can the truth of God and man be gained. God cannot be seen, felt, or heard by the material senses; neither can His image and likeness, man. Material sense actually cannot tell us a single thing about reality, for its entire testimony is based upon that which is unreliable, temporary, and limited.

Spiritual sense, on the other hand, has its source in God, Spirit, and unfolds the eternal truth of God and His infinite, perfect creation. It is of first importance, therefore, that we gain this true sense, for it brings with it immeasurable harmony and well-being. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 209), "Spiritual sense is a conscious, constant capacity to understand God." Through spiritual sense, the presence of Christ, Truth, is discerned, and spiritual reality is revealed.

Who has spiritual sense? Man, God's reflection, has it in unlimited measure. It is not something that man needs to acquire, or that he may have only in a limited amount or at a certain time. The real man expresses spiritual sense eternally and without limit; it constitutes his only consciousness, his true individuality.
