POSSIBILITY

Matt. 14:22—32

Fear-darkened sense told
Only of danger,
Of wind and night, menace of raging sea,
A frail craft's inadequacy.
Knew not how to behold
Love's way of earth-weightless journeying.
And then, at midnight, the Way-shower
Came to them, walking
On the water.

And one of them, following
Him as a man follows the secret,
Intuitive impulse of his heart, set
Foot on the sea.
Saw wind and wave boisterous,
Faltered; started to sink immediately.
And yet until he faltered, how glorious
Those faith-winged steps unfettered by
Mortality!
For one transparent moment Peter
Also had crossed the threshold of possibility;
He too had walked on the water.
