As a child, I suffered a great deal...

As a child, I suffered a great deal from the so-called common cold, which I then believed led to bronchial asthma. For many years I tried various material remedies, but nothing seemed to help. I learned of Christian Science through a loved one; but I did not ask for help from a Christian Science practitioner for some time, because I was not ready to part with the medicines.

Finally I did ask for treatments and had temporary relief. But there were still many faults of character to be overcome, as well as the fear of colds. One day while reading the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly the story of the woman who had had an infirmity for eighteen years greatly impressed me. When I read Jesus' words, "Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity" (Luke 13:12), they stood out very clearly, and each time I had an attack of asthma, I would deeply ponder their meaning.

I had dispensed with all medicines, but I kept a mechanical spray. Then these words from the Bible came to me (Matt. 6:24): "Ye cannot serve God and mammon." So I threw out the spray, and from then on I relied solely on Christian Science.
