OUR OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE

In grateful praise for the courageous workers in the early church in Rome, Paul wrote (Rom. 16:24), "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all." Paul lists the names of faithful servants of the church, many of them women: Phebe, Priscilla, Tryphena, Tryphosa, Persis, and others. He salutes Epaenetus, the first convert in Asia, as well as Greeks and Romans. He mentions Andronicus, Amplias, Urbane, Apelles, Herodion, Rufus, and others.

These Christians were of different nations and backgrounds. Some were apparently men of wealth and influence; some were slaves. Yet all were in the service of the church. They worked together in gratitude for the healing presence of the Christ.

Today equally dedicated workers in Christian Science have the same opportunity to serve primitive Christianity. They are doing the same kind of healing work as those early Christians. They take a stand against the powers of worldly evil by the same steadfast reliance on God as that which marked the work of early Christians. With the same selfless courage and trust in the one Mind, omnipotent Love, they turn Truth's penetrating light into the dark recesses of ignorance and evil and see them disappear.
