The Purpose and Opportunity of the Sunday School

[This is the first of five addresses given in the Extension of The Mother Church on June 4, 1958, in the interest of the Christian Science Sunday School. Another address will appear next week.]

It was our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who in 1885 established the Christian Science Sunday School, and for this we owe her our enduring gratitude. Undoubtedly, as on so many other occasions, she followed here the impelling leading of the divine Mind which had already revealed so much to her waiting thought and to which she had chosen, above all, to be obedient. That she regarded Sunday School activities as important and as an integral part of her Church is evidenced by the fact that she embodied the subject in Article XX of the Manual of The Mother Church.

The Christian Science Sunday School, then, is and will remain our Leader's provision for the children, a foundational trust. Let us strive earnestly to be faithful always to this trust, fulfilling our duty and responsibility as Mrs. Eddy would so rightfully expect us and all her followers to do.

Our Sunday School should be the means of ensuring to each rising generation a satisfying and lasting spiritual education. It should include, and make clear and understandable, the true nature of God and man, as well as of the universe of Love's creating, revealed in Christian Science. The Sunday School rightly provides the avenue for equipping our children and all children with spiritual enlightenment so that they may be able to discern between good and evil and take their stand on the side of right. It is expected to give them further an explanation of the deceptive nature of evil and the claims of matter or mortal mind.
