Our little daughter was not quite...

Our little daughter was not quite three years old when a condition appeared in one of her ears which was very painful. We worked as we are taught to do in Christian Science, and the problem appeared to be overcome. However, in a few days it reappeared, and again work was taken up.

One morning when she awoke, the picture was a particularly ugly one, and the child was in great pain. I knew there must be something in that week's Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly which would meet our need, and as I sat down to study the lesson, the little girl crawled up beside me and asked me to read to her. My first thought was that she was too young to get anything from the lesson, but I realized that if she was asking to learn more about God, I must not deprive her of it.

After I had read for a few minutes and she had remained very quiet, I came to the sentence in Science and Health where Mrs. Eddy quotes the words (p. 6), "'God is Love.'" I heard a little voice beside me repeat, "God is Love." I read a little further and came to the sentence (p. 473), "God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power." Again the child repeated, "God is everywhere." These were two statements which meant something to her, and she made them her own. She was very quiet as I finished reading the lesson.
