While living in a country where there were no Churches of Christ, Scientist, I felt especially grateful to our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for establishing the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," as the impersonal pastor of our church. Thus my pastor was no farther away from me than my hotel room.

I know that my salvation and the salvation of the whole world rest on obedience to the commands of our Master, Christ Jesus. The Gospels set forth these commands, and in Science and Health our Leader explains how we can actually put them into practice.

The beginning of my interest in Christian Science came about not because of its beautiful teachings, but because of a need for healing. Many years ago, during a widespread epidemic of influenza, I found myself with all the symptoms of this disease. It appeared that I would be confined to bed for a number of weeks, if indeed I should be fortunate enough ever to get out of bed again. I had become acquainted with a Christian Science practitioner in the city nearest to the small town where I lived, and I telephoned to her for help. Then I went to bed with a high fever. Sometime during the night the fever ceased, and I was at my desk the next morning without any interruption whatsoever to my regular work.
