Most of my life as an adult has been spent in military service, and until I gained an understanding of God through Christian Science, I took but little interest in religion. I had known of Christian Science most of my life, but in common with many others I waited until all material resources failed me before turning to it.

The last year of World War II found me in a military hospital with a long-standing stomach ailment, aggravated by conditions experienced while I was overseas. As the doctors had but little hope for my recovery, my wife, a devout student of Christian Science, requested that she be allowed to call the Christian Science Wartime Minister for me. I consented, and I was healed in one treatment.

However, the doctors could not believe that I was healed, and I was shipped off to a general hospital to go before a medical board, which would determine whether I should be retired from service. During the lengthy series of X rays that were taken, my wife became somewhat worried and called a practitioner, who said: "You have nothing to fear. They cannot take a picture of a spiritual idea."
