My first healing in Christian Science...

My first healing in Christian Science was of warts, which covered my hands. When I was enrolled in the Christian Science Sunday School at the age of eight, its logical teachings so appealed to me that I was eager to test Science for myself. I learned the definition of "Christ" given on page 583 of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy: "The divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error." Each time I thought of the warts I replaced that thought with the definition of Christ. In a very short time all the warts disappeared.

I shall always be grateful for our Sunday School workers and for the foundation their teaching gives. After that first healing I attended Sunday School regularly until I was twenty. Then I joined The Mother Church and a branch church. Later I also had the privilege of participation in a Christian Science Organization at a university.

Our family has experienced many healings through the application of Science. One landmark early in our study was the healing of a severely burned leg, which my brother suffered when his clothing caught fire as he played near a bonfire. Christian Science treatment was requested at once, and progress in healing the burn was evident. However, well-meaning neighbors who knew nothing of Science became convinced my parents were criminally negligent to have no medical care for the child. They reported the case to a welfare agency, which required us to call in a doctor. Although kind, he could do nothing to help. Moreover, he predicted that the child's leg, which had contracted, would never completely straighten.
