THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE READING ROOM

There was but one method available to Jesus whereby to reach the "man in the street" and that was to journey about the countryside teaching and proving the truth of his words by healing works. He entered the synagogues on Sabbath days and on invitation "stood up for to read" from the Scriptures, giving an interpretation of his message. But his greater effort seems to have been with the multitudes by the wayside or in the market place. In the Gospel of Matthew we read (9:36), "When he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd."

In busy streets of cities and towns today is to be found a Christian Science Reading Room—an activity of The Mother Church that in this age carries forward the ministering work of Christ Jesus. To meet the need of the multitude, Mary Baker Eddy instituted these rooms where the Bible and her writings and other Christian Science literature, as well as the biographies of Mrs. Eddy's life, are available to all.

To maintain the purity of Christian Science every safeguard was provided by our Leader in the Manual of The Mother Church. To this end the workers in the Field who supply copy, whether of news and advertising for The Christian Science Monitor, or articles, poems, and testimonies for the other periodicals, seek to conform to the standards our Leader set.
