ACTIVITY AND OBEDIENCE

Jesus' activity was always in obedience to God. His life and his work were a manifestation of the truth set forth in his statement (John 5:17), "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." No matter what might happen to be the ordinary occurrences of the day, Jesus was about his Father's business, preaching the kingdom of heaven, healing the sick and sinning, even raising the dead.

The Christian Scientist, under the leadership of Mary Baker Eddy, adopts Jesus' way of life as his model and example. As he proceeds with his study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings he comes to a realization that, valuable as his new-found understanding is and priceless as is the healing that has come with it, more is required of him. He learns that he must obey Jesus' command (Matt. 10:7, 8), "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give."

Mrs. Eddy envisioned the healing of sin and sickness as a purpose of her Church. The Christian Scientist then cannot view attendance at church services as optional, depending on whether or not he considers that he gets anything out of the service. He knows that in accordance with Mrs. Eddy's teachings his responsibility is to give, not to get. And to do this he must be willing to cast down "imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God," and bring into captivity "every thought to the obedience of Christ" (II Cor. 10:5).
