"GOD'S UNERRING DIRECTION"

In pondering the meaning of the word unerring as describing that which is incapable of mistake, one longs to gain such a definite sense of perfection. Yet only in God, immortal and unerring Mind, can the certainty of such perfection be found. Through the teachings of Christian Science, which illumine the Scriptures, the unerring direction of God unfolds to human consciousness, replacing chance with confidence and joy.

On page 424 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy states, "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony." An English dictionary is very helpful in defining the word chance, which is from a Latin word meaning "to fall." The definition reads: "Neither knowledge nor intention is attributed to it. With the Deity there is neither chance nor hazard. His plans are the result of Omniscience, but the designs and actions of men are all dependent on chance or hazard."

In these days of enlightenment it is surprising how much of mankind still holds to the thought of superstition, fate, and chance. Frequently one hears such remarks as, "We must not pass on the stairs;" "Keep your fingers crossed;" "Touch wood," or the more daring statement of helplessness, "I'll chance it." This hazardous way of thinking results from a belief in two powers, one evil and the other good, with no certainty or choice as to which will govern circumstances.
