CANONICAL WRITINGS

At each Sunday service of a Church of Christ, Scientist, before commencing to read the Lesson-Sermon as given in the Christian Science Quarterly, the First Reader makes a short announcement which includes the following statement: "The canonical writings, together with the word of our textbook, corroborating and explaining the Bible texts in their spiritual import and application to all ages, past, present, and future, constitute a sermon undivorced from truth, uncontaminated and unfettered by human hvpotheses, and divinely authorized."

The canonical writings as presented in the King James Version of the Bible, together with the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, constitute the essential equipment of every student of Christian Science. The canonical writings are a storehouse of spiritual treasure which, when unlocked by our textbook, enable us in the words of the Apostle Paul (I Thess. 5:21) to "prove all things; [and] hold fast that which is good."

It is the spiritual meaning of the Scriptures as given in the canonical writings of the Bible that must be diligently searched for. Christian Scientists search, ponder, and study the Scriptures, and a day never passes without fresh spiritual wealth being added to their store.
