CRISIS? OPPORTUNITY!

The Chinese write the word crisis with two characters: one means danger; the other, occasion or opportunity. Speaking of the great crises of the human race, Mary Baker Eddy says in her "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 176): "It is then that supreme devotion to Principle has especially been called for and manifested. It is then that we learn a little more of the nothingness of evil, and more of the divine energies of good, and strive valiantly for the liberty of the sons of God."

To Christ Jesus every crisis was an opportunity to prove that matter and its claims of sin, disease, and death are unreal, and he left us this encouraging assurance (John 16:33): "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." We must follow our Way-shower and overcome the belief in a world of matter by recognizing as the only real universe the spiritual universe of God. Let us turn from the disturbing belief that we are mortals, living in a dangerous world of matter, to the glorious realization that in our true being we are now children of divine Mind, God's ideas, living in a spiritual universe, subject to the laws of divine Principle, Love. The endeavor to prove this causes us to manifest spiritual qualities and gradually to overcome the belief that there are two worlds, one of matter and one of Spirit.

In the crisis of approaching death, when all material means had failed, Mrs. Eddy asked for her much-loved Bible and read of Jesus' healing of the palsied man. So much spiritual light flooded her consciousness that she arose from what seemed to be her deathbed, healed. For three years she searched the Scriptures until she found the Science, or law, which brought about her healing and linked Science to Christianity. What had seemed a dangerous crisis was an opportunity for the fulfillment of Jesus' prophecy that a Comforter would come which would lead into all truth. Christian Science is Mind's revelation of the truths of God and man. Through this revelation all mankind has the opportunity to learn the true nature of Mind and its idea.
