My gratitude for Christian Science...

My gratitude for Christian Science is profound. Christian Science has lifted me out of the views I held as a medical nurse into a desire to demonstrate the scientific Principle of healing. I was healed of a long-standing case of eczema in one treatment. I had an instantaneous healing of influenza at a Christian Science lecture. Character reformation has been gradual. As I did not know the Bible, I was ignorant of its rich spiritual heritage. The thoughtfully prepared Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly have been invaluable in helping me claim this heritage. I am grateful for the wealth of wisdom in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy; for all our dear Leader's other writings; for the authorized biographies, bringing out her consecrated life—her courage, patience, tender compassion, and love for her fellow crusaders; for the quiet sanctuary of our Reading Rooms, and for class instruction.

While serving as a Christian Science nurse I suddenly felt an excruciating pain in my chest. This alarmed me, for I had had a similar experience many years before, necessitating my staying in bed for some time. This time I turned to our textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I found this rule: "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself" (p. 385). The truth of this statement enabled me to continue working several days. However, the mental picture of my aforesaid experience was still in my thought, so I telephoned a practitioner for help. She assured me that the truths brought out in the Lesson-Sermon for that week would meet my need, and she directed me to certain citations. One of them, found in II Kings (6:15–17), records how the prophet Elisha's clear spiritual perception enabled him immediately to open the eyes of the young man to behold an army of angel thoughts in place of the Syrian host's chariots of war. I rejoice that I was healed in a few hours. I am grateful beyond words for this healing.

The choice vocabulary of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and its forever Leader, has given me a greatly enlarged understanding of the English language, for when I started to study Christian Science, I knew little but medical terms and theories, I pray in deep humility to learn to understand more fully the meaning of Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, p. 462), "Anatomy, when conceived of spiritually, is mental self-knowledge, and consists in the dissection of thoughts to discover their quality, quantity, and origin."
