WE LIVE IN GOD

At all times, and especially when living conditions seem to present problems to many people, much comfort is derived from the fact proclaimed in the Bible that we live in God. Paul, when speaking to the Athenians on Mars' Hill, announced this important truth, declaring (Acts 17:28), "In him [God] we live, and move, and have our being." Thus the apostle pointed to the means whereby we may enjoy the harmony and vitality of true living.

As Paul uttered these words, he could look over to the Acropolis nearby, with the pillared Parthenon crowning its height and the sunken theater beneath. He declared this truth regarding the one God in full view of those things which expressed a belief in many gods. The understanding of the one God, whom he so fearlessly proclaimed, is the effective antidote for the belief in polytheism, or gods many.

Paul's words doubtless startled the Athenian philosophers of his day, steeped as they were in material beliefs. Those who were responsive to spiritual truth, however, would accept this assurance and profit by it. This rousing declaration by the apostle has rung down the centuries, and it has been quoted time and time again by those of Christian faith. It has lifted many above the lower considerations of material existence to the higher facts of divine Life. It has brought health, strength, and comfort even when the vital truth it contains has been but faintly glimpsed.
