KNOWLEDGE OF TRUE SELFHOOD IS SPIRITUAL DEFENSE

In her illuminating article entitled "The Way," found in "Miscellaneous Writings," Mary Baker Eddy brings to light true and effective measures by which one is able to combat the fraudulent impositions of materialistic thinking. She states (p. 355): "To strike out right and left against the mist, never clears the vision; but to lift your head above it, is a sovereign panacea. Mental darkness is senseless error, neither intelligence nor power, and its victim is responsible for its supposititious presence." The last clause "and its victim is responsible for its supposititious presence" is indeed worthy of our thoughtful consideration.

Christian Science teaches that man's right to be the son of God, to be the continuous expression of Life not death, Love not hate, Truth not error, is inviolate. The power to be always His son is God's gift to His beloved child. And the Psalmist declares (Ps. 62:11), "God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God."

Because God, Spirit, is the only originator, the sole source and underlying substance of all that is or can be, the nightmare of materiality has no source from which to stem and no power by which to create a dreamer. The false believer and false belief are one lie, having no entity in the universe of divine Mind's intelligent ideas. The reality of the absolute oneness of the all-loving God ensures the unreality of evil's claim to duality as perpetrator or perpetration.
