"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." These words from John (8:32) had always challenged me, but with Pilate I asked. "What is truth?" In search of the answer, I studied philosophy at a university and investigated many religious denominations. It was not until five years ago, however, that I was led to study Christian Science and found the answer to my question.

At that time I was in great physical and mental distress. My mother had just passed on. A year before, I had resigned my teaching position to care for her, and the demands on me during that year had aggravated a condition from which I had suffered for years and which doctors had diagnosed as curvature of the spine, fallen stomach, gastritis, and chronic sinus trouble. I was in mental torture, as I could not accept my mother's faith that it was God's will that she be sick. During that period I read the entire New Testament, and there were many statements in it that I could not understand.

When I had suffered for weeks and thought I could never work steadily again, I felt led to go to my former high school to ask about substitute teaching. My savings were exhausted, and I felt that I could not submit to a life of dependency and invalidism without losing my sanity.
