Friendly Visits in the Home

[A contribution from a reader of this column]

The articles appearing in the Sentinel about our Sunday Schools and the relations of teacher, pupil, and parents have been very helpful to me, and I should like to relate some pleasant and profitable experiences that I have had.

In every class that I have taught, I have found that some of the pupils have come from homes where little was known about Christian Science. For one good reason or another the parents sent their children to the Christian Science Sunday School. Because I am always interested in the welfare of the children and in getting co-operation from parents in regard to home study and regular attendance, I have made a practice of calling upon the parents or a parent of every pupil in my class. Usually the visit is preceded by a telephone call to assure convenience to everyone. And I have always received a warm welcome.

I well remember that on two occasions when calling on the mothers I was greeted with tears of gratitude. In both instances the parents had attended a Church of Christ, Scientist, but a few times, and the love that prompted my call was very encouraging to them. I have noticed that parents who have been accustomed to social exchanges in a church of another denomination have been especially appreciative of my call. Parents who have no other contact with Christian Science than the Sunday School usually ask many questions, and the teacher is thus afforded an opportunity to explain something of the teachings of Christian Science.
