THE DEMONSTRATION OF SCIENTIFIC CONTROL

Any individual who undertakes the task of explaining events from the standpoint of material cause and effect is engaging in work which is impossible of accomplishment. Such attempts always acknowledge a material cause as a controlling influence. Actually there is but one cause, God, Spirit, and consequently any reasoning that includes a cause other than God must lead to a false conclusion.

Christian Science is a religion which, as its name implies, explains with scientific precision what are commonly regarded as mysteries of Christianity. It reveals God as the one and only creator and further shows that all He creates is spiritual and good. Therefore there can be no material cause or effect. Christian Science also shows that God is omnipotent. Consequently there can be no reality in material force. Christian Science clearly shows the incompatibility of divine verities and human theories, explains the truth of the former, and establishes the falsity of the latter.

Mary Baker Eddy discusses the nature of what she calls mortal mind its seeming consequence, matter, on page 114 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." She points out that there is but one Mind, and that this Mind is God, and that because of the infinite nature of God, any use of the term "mind" that has less than a deific meaning is a misuse of the word. However, language has made such abuse common, and anything that appears to have the ability to think is supposed to do so with its mind. It is this so-called mind to which Mrs. Eddy affixes the name "mortal mind." She concludes this discussion of immortal Mind and so-called mortal mind with the following statement: "Science shows that what is termed matter is but the subjective state of what is termed by the author mortal mind."
