In a spirit of gratitude and...

In a spirit of gratitude and humility I give thanks to God for Christian Science and for the blessings I have received.

Some years ago I was stricken with pains in my legs, and in a short time I was unable to walk. A physician was called, but he could not do anything to relieve the pain, and days passed without any relief. Then a specialist examined me. After the examination I was taken to a hospital, and while there I was given modern treatments and the best of care. After three months no hope for my recovery was given, and it was recommended that I be taken home and made as comfortable as possible, because I would not live much longer.

A few days before I left the hospital, a woman came into my room and said, "Would you like to try Christian Science?" I did not know what Christian Science was, but in order not to appear indifferent I said, "Yes." After I was taken to my home, a Christian Science nurse was engaged, and a practitioner commenced working for me. The Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly were read aloud to me, but I did not understand them. The word "Truth" and "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 468) were just words without any meaning to me. I was very slow to grasp the spiritual significance of the teachings of Christian Science. For months no change was apparent or noticeable in my condition. The joints of my fingers, arms, and legs were rigid, I could not move and had to be helped to turn on my side.
