I should like to take this opportunity...

I should like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the wonderful protection, guidance, understanding, and love that were demonstrated throughout my years of Navy service in the recent war.

Previous to my entry in the service I was blessed with the privilege of going to the Christian Science Sunday School, but I had never fully appreciated the training obtained until I was separated from home. I soon learned to trust in the sustaining, infinite Principle, Love. Christian Science enabled me to complete the work at three service schools with very high grades, healed me of measles in three days, and kept me on the right side of life during the war.

When I went aboard ship, I looked forward to it as a great adventure. I was immediately disappointed, for there were no bunks, lockers, or storage space available in the overcrowded quarters. This, along with bad food, maladministration, and continuous accidents, made me fearful and resentful. I had been trained for a specific kind of work, but my training was not being utilized. The sick bay was filled with varying degrees of injured personnel, and I learned that the ship's history was an unhappy one, fifteen men having lost their lives before the enemy was ever seen. Like many others aboard, I became disgruntled and unhappy and made myself miserable.
