"What We Can Do for the Children"

Of great concern to men and women today is the subject of child welfare. Those who are charged with the instruction and guidance of boys and girls are well aware of the fact that this generation is destined to build a new world. And they must build well, for only as they build on the new-old pattern of the Christ, Truth, will the foundation be secure and the development progressive. With millions of the world's children homeless and many thousands classified as juvenile delinquents, there is much that needs to be done to bring the true pattern to our future world architects.

"What We Can Do for the Children" is the caption of an item which appeared in the October. 1895, issue of The Christian Science Journal. The item, which was signed by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, marks an important event in the history of the Christian Science movement. It calls upon loyal Christian Scientists "to organize immediately a Sunday School for the children." A statement which defines the lessons appeared therein substantially as it appears today in Section 3 of Article XX of the Manual of The Mother Church.

The Christian Scientist, then, need not wonder what can be done for the children. He need not wonder how we can help the children to meet the temptations of the age or to make right decisions on important questions. And he need not wonder how we may so instruct the children that they will not wander from the teachings of Christian Science, and that they will be equipped to deal with any situation which the future may present. Article XX of the Church Manual tells us what "we can do for the children." When the lessons defined in Section 3 are faithfully taught in accordance with the method set forth in Section 2, we are doing for the children what our Leader intended we should do, and we may be sure that it is equal to their need.
