LETTERS TO THE PRESS

from Christian Science Committees on Publication

Charles M. Carr Committee on Publication for New Jersey The Daily Home News, New Brunswick

A writer in your columns has made some none too accurate statements about Christian Science. He says its adherents are "short-sighted indeed" who do not rely on vaccination. In all good nature, we must point out that had the writer acquainted himself with the facts, he would have discovered that the health record of Christian Scientists (including their freedom from so-called children's diseases) is considerably above the average. Christian Scientists are an asset to health insurance, workmen's compensation, and social security projects. They are helping substantially to raise, and not lower, the general standard of health. It is therefore not only right, but downright practical, that they be permitted to follow the healing method of their choice and not be required to undergo compulsory vaccination, especially when experience has shown in population areas much larger than New Jersey that no harm results from exempting Christian Scientists from compulsory vaccination.

Many people suppose that all children have to be inoculated and vaccinated in order to protect the majority. This is not true. If the majority are made immune by medical treatment, they are in no danger from the minority who are exempted. Many state legislators and boards of education recognize this fact, and are glad to make provisions to maintain precious religious rights.
