"One real bond"

Major Roswell K. Doughty in an address delivered in Walpole, Massachusetts

In my travels in many countries of the world I observed but one real bond amongst the people of the world no matter what their station in life, their creed, their color, their surroundings. That bond lay, not in any physical property, but in the highest indication of spiritual values that we know—the instinctive turning to something greater than ourselves for strength and courage, for an appreciation of life that cannot be found in the material properties of existence alone.
