Mrs. Eddy writes on page 269 of Science and Health, "Metaphysics resolves things into thoughts, and exchanges the objects of sense for the ideas of Soul." Just before the recent war the following experience was the beginning of my learning to do this.

For four years previously I had been employed in an office where I had met with persistent persecution from one easily able to inflict it, and if it had not been for the loving and understanding support of my colleagues, this persecution might very well have overwhelmed me. It was during the "slump" period and I was desperately anxious to keep my position, as my husband had been out of work for five years, and we had three small children.

A sense of hatred for this person crept into my thought so slowly that I had done only casual work in Christian Science about it. A warning, which was not understood and therefore went unheeded, was a plague of abscesses which broke out all over my body, and aggravated the mental distress under which I was laboring. I had known of Christian Science for some time and had seen wonderful healings result, but I still understood little of how they had been accomplished.
