Now Is the Time

When the inspiration for action came from God to our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, she instantly obeyed. A classic example of this is her procedure in starting the publication of a daily newspaper. On August 8, 1908, she wrote to the Board of Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society: "It is my request that you start a daily newspaper at once, and call it The Christian Science Monitor. Let there be no delay. The Cause demands that it be issued now." All arguments for delay were brushed aside by her intrepid stand for the right, and on November 25, 1908, the first issue was published. How thankful we are for the great boon to humanity of this international daily newspaper, and as it continues to fulfill its purpose of blessing all mankind, our gratitude to its Founder increases.

In any right undertaking we recognize that God, divine Mind, knows no delay or inaction. "Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action," writes Mrs. Eddy on page 283 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." As Christian Scientists we are progressively realizing that right action is the only real action and cannot be put off, because it is ever present. We are not the source of action. God is the all-acting One, and man is the expression of God, and his action cannot be bound with delay and inertia, for these are not in God.

Our beloved Leader tells us that she overcame procrastination when she inserted the chapter entitled "Animal Magnetism Unmasked" in Science and Health. For no apparent reason her publisher had stopped work. She relates in "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 38): "After months had passed, I yielded to a constant conviction that I must insert in my last chapter a partial history of what I had already observed of mental malpractice. Accordingly, I set to work, contrary to my inclination, to fulfil this painful task, and finished my copy for the book."
